VCUP and Remediation

Name:          Centennial Lake Park Expansion and Voluntary Cleanup
Location:      2501 West Union Avenue
                     Englewood, Colorado

Size:             10 acres

Owner/ Client:      City of Englewood
Prime Contractor: E-21 Engineering, Inc.

Project Description: E-21 conducted Phase 1 and Phase 2 investigations on two parcels of land, which contained an old, closed solid waste landfill operated by the city in the early 1960’s. Situated between the South Platte River and Centennial Lake Park, the land was desired to expand the park and connect to the South Platte River trail system operated by South Suburban Parks and Rec. E-21 prepared a comprehensive Voluntary Cleanup Plan (VCUP) for this hydrogeologically complex lake, groundwater, river, and landfill waste system. After state approval, E-21 constructed a closure and monitoring system including constructing a 1.5 to 5-foot thick clay cover and topsoil/turf system with a subsurface irrigation drain system above the clay cover. Other work included installing a electrical blower-powered methane gas trench and venting system to comply with property boundary explosive gas limits.

E-21 continues to conduct semi-annual monitoring of groundwater and landfill gas under the VCUP agreement.
